FAQs
What is tidings?
A letter-writing app, open source and privacy focused.
Is it private?
Yes. Letters are encrypted before they leave your device. The encryption keys are stored by you inside your sealkey and never leave your devices.
Why not use email?
Email can be great for work and promotion. For personal correspondence, it's been found inadequate. Firstly, email works best when the form of your letter is removed. Everybody has scrolled a thread of repeated corporate signatures trying to find the sentence or word of meaning. With personal letters, form is important: the choice of font, the whitespace, the colours. Also, email is not private: nearly all providers can read you and your sender's messages. Finally, where you read your treasured correspondence matters. With email, people are reading their treasured words amongst a slop of notifications, work demands and marketing.
How do I sign up?
Generate a sealkey which contains your unique address and a strong encryption key.
What is a sealkey?
A unique work of art you store on your computer or phone. Tidings uses it to hold your address and encryption key.
Why not use passwords?
Strong passwords are great. Sadly, very few people know how to generate and store them, making your letters vulnerable to decryption.
Can I lose access?
Yes. Losing your sealkey loses your letters. So treasure it, back it up, but never share or modify its contents.
